What are dental veneers?

Veneers are a product used in cosmetic dentistry to correct unwanted flaws and imperfections such as tooth discolorations, chips/cracks, front tooth gaps, or severely stained teeth.

According to the National Institutes of Health, dental professionals have been using veneers in cosmetic dentistry since the 1930s to improve the look and feel of patients' teeth. Technology has come a long way since then, but the process of veneering has largely remained the same—custom made to perfectly fit a patient's smile, these thin sheets of plastic or porcelain are cemented to the front of teeth to create a flawless look.

Due to their strong material makeup, veneers are extremely durable, lasting up to 15 years or longer! Furthermore, they are resistant to permanent staining from things like coffee, wine, and cigarette smoke.

How are veneers placed?

Due to how your dentist must remove a portion of existing tooth enamel to place the veneers, this treatment is a permanent improvement to your smile. After removing some enamel, a mold is taken of the teeth that are receiving the veneers. That tooth mold is then sent out to a dental technician lab that will design the veneers.

Dental veneer patients will need to schedule a second visit to have the veneers placed on their teeth. Once the veneers are in place, care and maintenance for good oral health are the same as for natural teeth.
